Place: National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing
Frequently performed to bring in the new year around the world, Die Fledermaus is the most popular operetta of all time. The waltzes, polkas, marches, csárdás and other musical gems typical of Strauss' music are all very familiar to Chinese audiences.
This new production is set In Bad Ischl, a thermal spa in Austria. Eisenstein insults an official and is sentenced to a short time in prison, but before he arrives at the jail he makes a quick stop at Prince Orlovsky's ball.
At the ball, Eisenstein encounters women disguised as pop stars and Hungarian countesses, much to his delight. Eisenstein flirts madly with the countess, who unfortunately turns out to be his wife. Lying, cheating and dancing ensues, but in the end there is only one guilty party: the champagne!
